Locke Surls Center for Art and Nature

ABOUT

Charmaine Locke, James Surls, Ruby Surls and Carlos Canul, are pleased to announce the new "Locke Surls Center for Art and Nature", previously known as Splendora Gardens.

Locke Surls Center for Art and Nature (LSCAN) is a multi-dimensional artistic space created with the express purpose of reconnecting our community with nature and human artistic expression, through direct immersion in the Piney Woods of East Texas, and an intimate engagement with art and the artist. Set against the backdrop of 177 acres, we provide unique artistic experiences both transitory and long term.

The connection with nature can revive the soul, and the mixture of art and nature is a powerful agent for insight and growth. Over the 40+ years of our stewardship of the property, the owners have experienced many of those moments. LSCAN exists to provide this type of experience to visitors as well as viewers and makers of art in all forms: visual and performing arts, music, poetry, and conceptual.

Locke Surls Center for Art and Nature will be centered in the Center and Print Shop, adjacent to the existing James Surls and Charmaine Locke Studios, where Carlos Canul also maintains his studio, and Ruby Surls her culinary practices.

The Center will be the entry point for visitors to the inaugural outdoor exhibition “A Gift From the Bowers”. Fifteen renowned sculptors from across Texas have been invited to place work within a “green room – a bower” along a meandering path through the woods.

Maps describing the locations, and biographical information on each artist, will be available at the Center. The Print Shop will be a producing print facility for both Surls and Locke, and other artists.
